Book Review - Roadmap by Moonlight: A Guide to Wicca for Life

by Deborah Lipp

Review by Si Mandragora

Kwan Yin - Goddess of Compassion

At this point in time, there are so many books on Wicca pulling for your attention that it can seem overwhelming to choose one to steer you in the right direction. As someone who has long recommended author Deborah Lipp to seekers looking for guidance in Wicca, I knew her latest book “Roadmap By Moonlight” would not disappoint. Those suspicions were confirmed when I dove into the book and found hidden gems filling its pages.

If you are unfamiliar with Deborah Lipp, she is a seasoned author with a variety of books willing to meet you wherever you are in your journey – from the experienced practitioner to someone just starting to dip their toe in the cauldron. She writes with intelligence, thought and purpose – all the while being easy to understand and staying focused. As a reader, I find these to be important traits for any author to have but in this subject even more so. Lipp has a way of cutting through the fluff and getting to the heart of the practice.

What makes “Roadmap by Moonlight” different from the other slew of titles that may serve a similar purpose, is that it covers the huge breadth of information taught in Outer Courts (or training covens) in one book but does so using modern language and sensibilities. Coming from a Gardnerian background, she offers a glimpse into aspects of the practice that aren’t always available to the general reader.

No matter where you are in your journey, “Roadmap by Moonlight” has something to offer: it goes over what Wicca is and is not; discusses different traditions under the Wiccan umbrella; covers the gods, circle casting, wheel of the year rituals, life rites and a plethora of other information. In all honestly this book could easily serve as a Book of Shadows itself, or at the very least, help fill the one you have with invaluable knowledge and expertise. It helps the reader understand the life of a Wiccan by explaining the way many of us live our lives – intertwined with magic and ritual.

For someone who wants to really grasp what Wicca is, look no further. Whether you have read every grimoire under the sun or this is the first book on Wicca you crack, you will find something valuable within these pages. If you are someone who runs a coven and teaches others, this book will be an invaluable resource that you recommend for years to come.
