Meetings are held in Burbank or San Gabriel. Ghostwheel is an eclectic tradition that began in Western Europe, but over time, ceremonies from other traditions and religions found their way into our practice. This includes Ceremonial, Indigenous, Egyptian, Hoodoo/Conjure and Spiritualism.

We worship the Goddess and the God in all their many forms. In our rituals, we tend to honor the European (and sometimes Egyptian) gods and goddesses, but for spell work and in personal magic, our members honor the Pantheon of many different cultures.

We accept members of all genders, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

We follow the Wheel of the Year, celebrating the seasons of the European agricultural calendar, including the 8 major sabbats. We also meet at every full moon and blue moon.

This is a 4-year program of study. Don’t be concerned about that, the time will pass very quickly. Everyone, regardless of background or prior experience, starts at the beginning.

Classes begin in January or February, although we admit students later if necessary. Before you begin classes, there will a be group orientation when you will learn more specific information about the tradition and your commitment, and our commitment to you. We do require an Oath of Secrecy. You will not be able to discuss anything that happens in our classes or rituals with anyone outside of the tradition. Be sure you are comfortable with that obligation. The Ácholt Inhíred is a Seax Wica in-person coven based in Sacramento, California that bridges Neo-Pagan and Heathen communities. Formed in spring 2023, the inhíred presents a praxis of modern magical practice founded on values of transparency, egalitarian administration, and the principle that all peoples regardless of religion, race, gender, sexuality and ability are welcome in the spheres of Northern Paganism. Because this group is tangential to (and many members freely participate in) other heathen organizations, we must be clear that the Ácholt Inhíred is in full support of Declaration 127, and further recognize that it is insufficient alone to decry racists and bigots within our community. To that end, we support the more fully realized Declaration of Deeds proposed by Wind in the World Tree. We specifically acknowledge that the Asatru Folk Assembly (AFA) is active just outside of Sacramento, and that it is our responsibility to maintain a transparent, radically inclusive vision of northern neo-paganism that is in direct opposition to the ideals of Stephen McNallen. In DarkStar we worship the Old Gods and practice the Art of Witchcraft for personal, spiritual, and magical growth. Gardnerian Wicca is a Priesthood of the old Pagan Gods – and we do not have a congregation like a church.

Generally speaking, Wicca in its myriad forms is the only major religion that England has given to the world! Wicca has many variations that have come into being since the term “Gardnerian” was first used to describe the original tradition that was passed to others by Gardner in the 1950s. Today there are many misconceptions about Wicca. Suffice to say, being in the Gardnerian tradition does not mean that we have an unwavering attachment to a set of rigid beliefs and practices or consider ourselves better than other Witches. We acknowledge that there are many other forms of Witchcraft - and Wicca. We are simply called to this particular tradition because it resonates with us.

If you are a beginner who is interested in Wicca, we suggest that you do some preliminary research in order to figure out what sort of Pagan or Witchcraft group you are looking for before approaching anyone to ask about training or membership. (Wikipedia has some fairly decent information on Modern Paganism and Witchcraft traditions). It’s a good idea to be informed before contacting a group because there is a great deal of variety.

DarkStar was founded in 2001. Some coven members have decades of experience in the Craft prior to the formation of the current group. Our Gardnerian heritage is through both Eleanor Bone and Patricia Crowther – two of Gerald Gardner's High Priestesses in England. Our credentials can be confirmed via our contacts with other Gardnerians worldwide. Please note that DarkStar is a private group and we do not hold open public meetings or provide classes to the general public. DarkStar Coven is an inclusive coven that embraces diversity. We believe in equal rights for all.

Once you have done some preliminary research, if you find that you are drawn to DarkStar Coven and are interested in joining, you must meet the following basic criteria for consideration: You are over 18 years of age (we prefer 21+); you are of good character; and you have reliable transportation. If you are outside of our immediate commuting area, travel will be required. Our coven’s Circles are in person, so the ability to attend in-person meetings and Circles is very important. Our meetings are held on the weekends.

If you are interested in working with us, you must also have sound ethics and be able to take responsibility for your word and deeds. You need to exhibit a serious desire towards personal growth and learning. The journey towards becoming a competent Priest or Priestess of the Gardnerian tradition can take 5-7 years.

Please be mindful that any previous experience you have does not necessarily put you on a fast track towards initiation or advancing in the coven - but it may count towards some of our requirements. Please be mindful that our path brings us together in our spiritual community as brothers and sisters. Most people in the Craft have a strong sense of “family” - which often develops into lifelong friendships. So do note that we take whatever time is necessary to get to know potential coven members. Besides the criteria already mentioned, we are interested in individuals who we feel are the “right fit” for us – which also means that we need to be the “right fit” for you!

Everyone in the group is expected to work together towards the greater good under the guidance of the coven leaders. There is no guarantee that if you begin to work with us that you will be initiated. Honestly, sometimes it simply does not work out. (If that happens, we will try to refer you to another group.)

It is important to send a Letter of Introduction when contacting a group that you are interested in. Many groups (including ours) will not respond to vague requests asking to join a coven without some idea about who you are and what you are seeking.

Therefore, when contacting DarkStar, please introduce yourself. We’d like to know a little bit more about you – not just that you are interested – so be sure to mention your age, occupation, the town you live in or nearby – and any other relevant details you wish to share about yourself. (Please also indicate where you heard about us.)

The Lamplighter Coven is forming a California branch of the Horsa Tradition which originates from one of the New Forest covens in England. Our line of Horsa was brought to the US by British Witch Sybil Leek in the mid-1960’s and Sacred Pentagraph was established by Sybil Leek, Charmaine Dey and Tarostar in the late 1960’s. Valley Oaks Coven is a CVW traditional coven under the umbrella of British Traditional Wicca and shares practices with other BTW groups like Gardnerian and Alexandrian. This is a newly formed initiatory training coven. Classes for pre-initiates will start in January 2025. The elders of this coven have been in practice for 30 years and wish to help others enter into the Priesthood of the Gods.
